Every Design Has a Soul

When you look at a Reefly Rooted design, you are not just looking at a graphic on a shirt.

At the center of each design is something real — an island someone calls home.

For me, that is what makes these designs special.

The shape of an island can instantly mean something to the person who comes from there. It can represent home, family, childhood memories, grandparents, generations that came before us, or simply the place where our roots began.

That is why every Reefly Rooted design starts with the island.

It Starts With the Shape

One of the most important parts of creating Reefly Rooted has been representing the islands as accurately as possible.

An atoll isn't just a circle or a generic island shape. Each one has its own recognizable form — its reef, lagoon, islets, curves, and openings that make it unique.

I don't want to turn those shapes into something they're not just to make a design look prettier.

The island itself is the heart of the artwork.

Because when someone finds their island on Reefly Rooted, I want them to recognize it.

I want them to have that feeling of:

That's home.

Inspired by the Islands

Once the island becomes the foundation, the artwork around it is inspired by the colors, surroundings, and feeling of life in the Marshall Islands.

Ocean

The ocean is part of everyday life in the Marshall Islands.

It surrounds our islands, connects them, feeds our families, and has shaped Marshallese life for generations.

Ocean-inspired designs use shades of blue and imagery that reflect that connection between our islands and the Pacific.

Flowers

The natural beauty of the islands also inspires many Reefly Rooted designs.

Tropical flowers and soft island colors bring a different feeling to the island outlines — colorful, feminine, and full of life.

Sunsets

If you've watched the sun go down over the ocean in the Marshall Islands, you know how beautiful it can be.

Pinks, oranges, corals, blues, and golden tones inspire designs that capture a little of that feeling of an evening back home.

Patterns Inspired by Island Life

Some Reefly Rooted designs also incorporate patterns and visual elements inspired by the textures, art, weaving, ocean life, and surroundings of the Marshall Islands.

These elements are meant to complement the island — never replace what matters most:

the place itself.

Why Accuracy Matters to Me

When you're creating something that represents someone's home, details matter.

That's especially true for the Marshall Islands.

Some of our islands may look similar to someone unfamiliar with them, but to the people connected to those places, they are not interchangeable.

That is why I put so much importance on the island outlines used in Reefly Rooted designs.

I want someone from Ailuk to see Ailuk.

Someone from Wotje to see Wotje.

Someone from Jaluit to see Jaluit.

Someone from Ebon to see Ebon.

And the same should be true for every island represented by Reefly Rooted.

Every Island Deserves to Be Seen

It would have been easy to create designs only for the islands that are better known.

But that wasn't what I wanted Reefly Rooted to be.

I wanted someone to be able to come to the store, look for their island, and find something created with their home in mind.

Because a smaller or less familiar island isn't less important to the family who comes from there.

Every island carries stories.

Every island carries memories.

Every island is home to someone.

And every island deserves to be represented.

More Than a Design

At the end of the day, Reefly Rooted designs are meant to be beautiful.

But I hope they can also mean something.

Maybe you wear your island because you grew up there.

Maybe you wear it because your parents did.

Maybe it represents your grandparents.

Maybe you're raising children far from the Marshall Islands and want them to know the name and shape of the place their family comes from.

Or maybe seeing that little outline simply makes you think of home.

Whatever your story is, the design belongs to you once you give it meaning.

That's why I believe every design has a soul.

Because behind every island is a place.

Behind every place are people.

And behind every person is a story worth carrying forward.
